A wheat cent, also known as a Lincoln cent or Lincoln penny, is a one-cent coin minted in the United States from 1909 to 1958:
Design
The obverse (front) of the coin features a portrait of Abraham Lincoln, while the reverse (back) depicts two stalks of wheat. The coin's top edge has the national motto, "E Pluribus Unum".
The coins were minted in Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco. A total of 26 billion wheat cents were produced.
Replacement
In 1959, the wheat cent was replaced by the Lincoln Memorial cent to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Lincoln's birth.
